Request for Scholarship
Thank you very much for your
interest in the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.
We are pleased that you have turned to us
in your search for a scholarship.
Our Scholarship Programme is open to foreign
students and postgraduates at German universities
if applicants are qualified according to our
scholarship requirements. All applicants are
subject to a preliminary selection process
under which the applicants' qualifications
are checked and the chance for a successful
application is assessed carefully.
We would very much like to assist you with
your application for a scholarship, but find
ourselves unable to support you as you do
not meet our minimum entry requirements at
this stage, namely:
- an acceptance from a German university
for a postgraduate course or for a Ph.D.
program, and
- the ability to communicate fluently in German,
both orally and in written format.
We do, however, wish you every success with
your studies and invite you to contact us
again once the above two requirements are
fulfilled. We can then provide you with more
detailed information on our selection process
and on further requirements for a successful
application to our Scholarship Program.

The Alumni of Our Scholarship Holders
LEE Yong-Jin (Ph.D. Candidate, Public Administration
& Political Science, University of Potsdam,
Germany)

The famous English philosopher Francis Bacon (1561-1626) left us a golden saying "Knowledge is Power [scientia est potentia]". But for me it means that "Knowledge is freedom" to do something or to go somewhere more easily.
It seems like that to study abroad, especially
in Germany, gave me a chance to see or contact
something new, but to be a scholarship student
of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation gave me
a kind of engine or wings to run and fly freely.
Since late fall 1999 I took 3 months long
German language course at the University of
Potsdam and from the spring/summer semester
2000 on I am in the Ph.D. degree program at
the department of Public Administration and
Political Science at the University of Potsdam.
With the help of Professor Eung-Kyuk Park,
Director of Graduate School of Local Autonomy
at Hanyang University and Dr. Du-Nam Chung,
ex-scholarship holder of the FNF who encouraged
me to apply for this scholarship which I received
from May 2001 on. Thanks to the scholarship
I am financially independent and can expand
my academic, political and social horizon
to see the world and my life. In interesting
seminars and various academic, political,
social and cultural programs of FNF I was
veryl motivated and stimulated to do or to
think over something new.
After receiving my Ph.D. degree in the near
future I would like to contribute to the political
and administrative reform policy related to
unification including democratic civic education
in the two Koreas and the promotion of bilateral
ties between Europe (inclusive of Germany)
and Korea.

Kim, Jung-goo ( Korea Exchange Bank )

I am Jung-Goo Kim. In the recent years, I
have been responsible for the Risk Management
Division of the Korea Exchange Bank as a delegate
of the Commerzbank in Germany. The risk management
is a new management concept introduced in
the wake of the financial crisis that swept
Korea during 1997-1998.
Starting in 1981 at the University of Muenster,
I studied at four different universities (TH
Aachen, Uni. Koeln, GH Wuppertal). When I
worked in Frankfurt, my family rented a house
in Hofheim, near the Taunus range, which was
my last stay in Germany. I still have many
wonderful memories of typical small German
cities and beautiful rural sceneries in Germany.
Muenster is a historic city in the middle
German plain with a beautiful lake called
A-see. The city is considered a heaven for
bicyclists. Although I spent there only one
semester during my German language course,
I like the city as my hometown in Germany.
The city of Aachen with its boarders to the
Netherlands and Belgium has a famous engineering
college. I completed my Vordiplom study in
Business Administration there. The city of
Cologne is a well-known commercial and industrial
center at the Rhein River and has a majestic
cathedral, one of the most-sought-after tourist
sites in Germany. I graduated at the University
of Koeln with a major in Industry Business,
Strategic Planning, and Business IT.
During my master course I was a scholarship
holder of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation
and received financial support. In seminars
of the foundation, I had a lot of chances
to contact students from many other countries
and to discuss interesting issues that I never
got from regular studies at universities.
After my graduation I got a job at the well-known
consulting firm, Coopers & Lybrand in Germany,
and at the same time I started a two-year
doctor course at the University of Wuppertal.
I still regret that I couldn't finish my doctoral
dissertation due to a heavy work burden after
having got a job at the bank.

Lim, Min-sook ( Managing Director & CEO, Inter-Kult )

I majored in Social Science and Mass Communication
at Goettingen University in Germany, and I
have been a scholarship student of Friedrich
Naumann Foundation from 1988 to 1990. After
I got my Master Degree, I had an experience
as a cub reporter in the International Politics
Department of the ZDF (Broadcasting Company)
in Germany. When I came back to Korea in 1993,
I established Inter-Kult, which is a kind
of company to make a plan for the performance
on the works of stage arts abroad and international
events.
Inter-Kult provides solutions and tools for
limiting factors originated from the lack
of information and cultural understanding
between Korea and European countries. It was
also aimed that Korean culture and industry
could be firmly planted into the world by
promoting the smooth and diverse interchanges.
When I remember in my days as a scholarship
student of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation
in Germany, I could feel time flies. But the
excitement and expectation to the new experiences,
and the challenge and tension to the unlimited
possibility are still fresh in my mind. It
was a great financial support to me, but a
lot of information and experiences, which
I could receive as a scholarship student,
were more important than anything else. Thanks
to the diverse education programs and seminars
based on the idea of liberalism, I could have
a confidence and sense of mission through
the experiences in the society and politics.
My professional sense is based on this confidence.
Looking back to Theodor-Heuss Haus in Gummersbach,
I am filled with nostalgic sweetness. I missed
an opportunity to visit Gummersbach though
I have been to Germany and other European
countries frequently. Sooner or later I will
visit the Theodor-Heuss Haus in Gummersbach
for sure with expectations.

Doo-Nam Chung (MBC, TV Program Planning, Senior Researcher)

I studied communication science and political
science at the Free University of Berlin since
summer 1989. I have two important experiences
during my stay in Germany. One thing was to
be a witness of the German reunification,
the other was to be a scholarship student
of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation. As a
scholarship student of FNF I could have contact
with variety of students from all around the
world and with many different social and political
organizations. I could also participate at
the internship program of the German parliament
(Bundestag) and had a chance to learn intensively
about political structure and political culture
of Germany. I recieved my Ph.D. in the field
of broadcasting policy 2000 and came back
to work as a media researcher at the MBC-TV.
I would like to make use of lectures on German
reunification for the Korean reunification
and to contribute to the bilateral relationship
between Korea and Germany. Some years have
passed since I came back to Korea, but I am
still missing German beer.
