Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats
|
| |
|
| |
The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats
(CALD) is an umbrella organisation of
political parties from eight Asian countries.
These liberal and democratic parties
have joined hands with the aim of exchanging
ideas and discussing political solutions
to the challenges of our times. CALD
was founded in December 1993 in Bangkok
in the presence of Chuan Leekpai, the
former Prime Minister of Thailand, and
former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung.
In its ten-year history, CALD has held
numerous regional and international
conferences and seminars, and published
a series of books. The organization
is led by a rotating chair-party, which
at this given time is the Democrat Party
of Thailand. The permanent CALD-Secretariat
is located in Manila. During the first
CALD Young Leaders Workshop in the Philippines
in 2002, young politicians from CALD-member
parties and other liberal and democratic
organizations founded the "Young Liberals
and Democrats of Asia" (YLDA).

Liberal International
|
| |
|
| |
Liberal International (LI) is the world
federation of liberal political parties.
Founded in 1947 it has become the pre-eminent
network for liberal parties and for
the strengthening of liberal democracy
around the world. There are a number
of common principles which unite all
liberal parties from Africa, the Americas,
Asia, and Europe : human rights, free
and fair elections and multiparty-democracy,
social justice, tolerance, social market
economy, free trade, environmental sustainability
and a strong sense of international
solidarity. Given the different national
political developments and history,
liberal parties differ as far as the
application of these principles is concerned.
